When "Mr. Chocolate," Jacques Torres , opened his first chocolate factory and retail shop in Brooklyn, I'm sure he never imagined a museum dedicated to chocolate would operate under his brand name in one of New York's City's most posh neighborhood's - Soho. The Jacques Torres museum, which opened earlier this week, is dedicated to the origin and development of chocolate. The 5,000-square-foot museum includes nine premium chocolate tastings consisting of blend and single-origin chocolates in white, milk, and dark varieties, original Mayan hot chocolate freshly ground by hand, and hand-made chocolate truffles. You can bet I tasted each and every one of them ;)
Professional Chocolatiers will show you how cocoa originated as a rudimentary drink and went on to become the "Food of Gods." Visitors can also witness truffles being hand-made with step by step instructions by the chef. I had the opportunity to meet the mastermind behind the dark temptation - Mr. Jacques Torres. Amidst a press conference and video recording, he stepped away to say hello and gave me a brief background of chocolate. The experience felt quite personal, and his passion for chocolate was overwhelmingly infectious. Although the museum is still brand new and has a couple unfinished elements, I highly recommend paying a visit before it attracts loads of tourists.
The museum is a part of Jacques Torres Chocolate shop (350 Hudson St, New York, NY 10014) and visitors can definitely pick up some of the brand's signature treats post the tour. Let's just say this is the perfect stop on your cheat day!
